Customer Service from Amazon and Customer Service from Sprint – how to do it and how not to do it

[spacer height=”20px”]

Yesterday I had two customer service experiences that are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

I discovered the night before that my Kindle Fire HD I bought on black Friday last year had static in the sound. I rarely use the sound so have no idea how long it had been like this, but figured my year long warranty was just about up. So, I got online as soon as I got up, spent less than two minutes searching for information on how to get service and used their marvelous system where you enter a phone number and they call you back. My wait time was less than a minute. A nice lady came on, had me restart it, determined the problem still existed, and asked how I’d like the new unit shipped out. I asked them to ship it by a slower method to Kansas, so it will arrive at the same time I will. They offered to ship it two day at no charge. Total elapsed time: 1:37 minutes. Yes, less than two minutes.

Yesterday I also needed to deal with the ongoing issue of my Samsung Galaxy II with Sprint service. In the last few months I have devoted at least – and I’m not exaggerating – at least 30 hours of my life to dealing with this phone and the fact that the charging port continually needs to be repaired. It won’t charge. Again. Unfortunately, I’m not at home where the service guys all know me and just take it from me when I walk in the door, knowing what needs to be done. I love those guys – they should medals from Sprint, but if Sprint treats employees like they treat customers I’m guessing there’e little hope of that.

So, I drove to Paducah – an hour long plus round trip, to take it to a repair center there. But, the repair centers listed on the Sprint website – YES, on their own website – didn’t answer the phone. I spent over an hour calling various Sprint stores, talking to corporate, etc. Eventually, they directed me to a Sprint store that listed open hours until 7 yesterday. After two phone calls for directions, we found the place – their sign was not lit up. I went in and chatted with a very nice young lady who told me she couldn’t repair the phone because she hadn’t been trained on it. She said they were a new store. Then she said they’d been there since May. I’m not sure which is true. I just know my phone is a brick. Total elapsed time: 3 hours 48 minutes. No resolution.

I now have my old Evo charging, which I brought with me because my Galaxy II is a piece of junk. Actually, it was a great phone for about a year, which is when phones need to be replaced, which brings me to yet another thing I’m really ticked off at Sprint about. I’ve always had a yearly upgrade. This is the first one that has been expected to last for a year. It hasn’t. I’m also not sure what I’m getting for my Total Equipment Protection money. Although, in fairness, somewhere along the way someone offered to replace the phone with another Galaxy II, which seemed a bit insane to me, since the charging port is a “known problem.” Why set up a new phone with all my customizations to just be making the same regular treks to the store to have the charging port worked on? They offered the same thing in Paducah, but I won’t be here next week when they could get another one in. I offered to pay the difference to just upgrade the phone when it started having problems, but they wouldn’t let me do that.

I have been a Sprint customer since 1999. They talk a lot about valuing me as a customer, inbetween apologizing to me for the phone problems and the coverage problems. I wish they’d employ fewer people to apologize to me and more people to address the issues they have people apologizing about. I’ve been with them 14 years and have never been late with a payment, and yet I could consistently get a better deal if I were a brand new customer.

When they lost the Nextel network, my coverage went to pretty much all roaming if I get five miles from my house. They also disabled an app I used once or twice a year to use my phone as a hot spot. They want me to pay them even more money to do that. I’ve been paying an extra $10 a month for years now to use a 4G network I couldn’t access.

I want some basic things from my cell phone company:
1. Coverage
2. A new phone every year
3. Decent service when needed. Everyone I’ve ever dealt with is very pleasant and wants to be helpful, but they can’t actually address any issues.
4. To use whatever app I want however I want.
5. To be appreciated for being a good customer – throw me a perk every once in awhile. It’s cheap for you and it makes me a happy customer. I tend to tell people when I’m happy as well as when I’m not.
6. Stop apologizing to me. It just ticks me off because I recognize it as a way to avoid actually dealing with the issue.
7. Unlimited everything – I don’t have the energy to monitor my data usage. That’s not how I want to spend my time.

So, I’ve been shopping. I’ve come to the conclusion cell phone companies are the new airlines. They all do bad business because no one is doing it well so there’s no where to run.

At this point, I’m open to bidders. Long term customer who always pays her bill on time looking for cell phone company who will actually appreciate her. Any takers?

Long Day

It has been a long day.

I’ve got some funky computer problem and it is hurting my brain. It also caused me to run back and forth between home and the office today to get things prepared for the board meeting. I thought I had all I needed and went to the office. Then I couldn’t print from my laptop because the printer didn’t have a USB port the the laptop didn’t have a serial port. I thought – no problem – I have the external harddrive from home – I’ll hook it into the office machine. Ooops… it doesn’t have the software. I was worn out by the time of the board meeting.

No one can seem to figure out the computer problem. I can do everything except upload/ftp large files. Large being anything that’s not tiny. If anyone has any ideas what the deal is, I’d certainly appreciate your input. The ISP is clueless. I’m clueless. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I’ve rebooted from unscrewing the cable for the wall on up to the machine. I’ve even changed out ethernet cables. Nothing solves the problem. An online search has not netted any answers either. So, please, share your techie wisdom with me.

In addition, I discovered tonight that my dishwasher doesn’t seem to want to work. So, I’ve got to deal with that.

On the upside, Matthew called tonight and we chatted for about three hours. We were talking about our past travels and thinking about future ones. It’s good to reconnect with him. I’ve also reconnected recently with Jim, who Matthew and I met in Guatemala. He lives on the west coast and we all met when we were sharing a van to the airport one morning to go hiking at Tikal. Jim and I later went on a trip through the South together. You know you’re good potential travel partners when you meet while you’re all boarding planes that aren’t licensed to fly internationally to go hike in the Guatemalan jungle.

Well, I need to get some sleep if I can. Sleep is rather elusive for me these days but I need some.

Corel Painter

On one of my art lists, they’ve been talking lately about Corel Painter versus Photoshop. I’ve been using Corel for many years – much longer than Photoshop, and yet I’ve never played with Painter. This is unusual for me – I’m usually quite the experimenter. But, I’ve mostly used Corel Draw, not Painter.

Well, at the urging of folks like Karen Winters, who’s work I really admire, I took a few minutes tonight to play with it. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/kwintt/ and http://www.karenwinters.com/journalpages/ to see Karen’s amazing work)

It just so happened that red was the default and I automatically drew a heart, playing with a variety of brushes and such that you can’t see here.

Anyway, I just kept playing around with various things and ended up with this odd – but some reason appealing (at least to me) heart.

Maybe it’s because my heart is still broken, maybe it’s because it’s trying to heal a bit. Whatever the reason I was inspired to draw a heart – it could have been that red was selected because I was working on a logo before that – I thought I’d share it here.

Now, after this little interlude, I must get back to work on garden tour things! Being sick and in bed for a day and a half did not help my schedule at all. Fortunately, I’m feeling better.

Living in Printer Hell

We have an event tomorrow – a booth at the Soroptimists Women’s Show at the Fair Grounds. They’re very kind and give booth space to lots of the non profits, including us.

If you’d asked me yesterday, I would have said I had about 90 minutes worth of things to do and would have it all set up. Well, I got up at 5 a.m. and got home after set up about 8:15 p.m. Things didn’t go quite as smoothly as I had planned.

I did have breakfast with Greg at Skaets and dinner at the anchor, but didn’t even take time for lunch. Printers and I have not been on good terms today.

I am going to offer a Gratitude Journaling Workshop in May through the MHA and so I wanted to put together a little flyer for it. Also, one for our upcoming rummage sale and one for the garden tour. These are not major projects – it’s all I got done all day. lol

Well, that’s not true, I worked on my United Way presentation this morning for an hour or so and printed it out to take a fresh look at it later.

Anyway, I got ready to print the flyers and sent it to my pretty new Brother MFC 210C printer and did not hear the paper pulling through the machine, but instead heard this horrible grinding. I got online, they said to look for a foreign object in the machine. I turned it upside down, literally, and found nothing. So, eventually I called support and I have to say I got the BEST support I’ve ever gotten – we did a reset and it was still a problem so… they’re sending me a completely new machine. I wish they would teach the Circuit City service people – don’t buy those service contracts, they’re a complete waste of money – and the Compaq/HP people about customer service.

The last time I dealt with them I finally told the guy, “Look, I can appreciate that your English is exceptional – but I am having a hard time understanding your accent and I just cannot devote 75% of my attention to figuring out what you’re telling me to do and only 25% to the very complex matter of working on my computer and trying to not make it into a paperweight. Transfer me to someone else, please.”

The woman at Brother was a native English speaker and offered an immediate, and very good, solution. I will remember that the next time I’m in the market for a product.

Well… anyway… back to the problem at hand… getting my flyers out of the computer and into hard copy. No problem. I happen to have a second printer. So, I load it up. It prints about 10 pages and says the ink is out. No problem. I keep an extra cartridge on hand. I put it in and the paper comes out blank. Apparently, it’s dried up.

So, I got to visit Office Max. By now it’s afternoon. I still have to go to the office and gather up materials for tomorrow and I’ve made plans to meet people at Anchor Inn for dinner. Well, fast forward to the part where at 5:23 I’m leaving my office and going to dinner and setting up after that. Apparently I had a little more than 90 minutes worth of stuff to do.

Dinner was nice – Andrea, Teresa, Debbie and Jocelyn came. Lots of folks are out of town this weekend. Debbie and I both headed out to the fair grounds for more set up afterwards.

I’m really fortunate that three of my board members are working tomorrow, so I only have to do the last couple hours of the day and break down. It gets to be a really long day if you’re there by yourself all day. Hopefully it will go well. This is a big show and it’s usually very well attended.
